Our other spicy secrets:

Like many of their customers, owners Tony and Kelly Jerulle have plenty of Sammy’s stories to tell. For instance, they both grew up on the Iron Range as loyal customers of the original Sammy’s Pizza in Hibbing. They’ve often wondered if they ever crossed paths there as children.

But it was at Sammy’s Pizza Grand Rapids where they ultimately met. The restaurant opened in 1984 with Tony as the owner and manager. Three years later, Kelly happened to apply for a job at her favorite restaurant, and the rest is history.

Tony and Kelly, along with their entire staff, pride themselves on their great food and service, and strong community involvement. They also love providing a place for friends and neighbors to gather to tell – or make – their own Sammy’s stories.

One such story started 20 years ago. Tony was golfing one day at nearby Pokegama Golf Course and ran into a foursome of players. He knew three of the men, who introduced him to the fourth – a man named Tom. By coincidence, Tom’s family was rooted in Hibbing, his father had worked at the Sammy’s Pizza there for three years, and his grandparents were longtime customers. To this day, Tom and Tony remain good friends, and Tom is a frequent customer at Sammy’s Pizza Grand Rapids. (The next time you visit the restaurant, check out booth 93. Chances are you’ll find Tom and another good friend, Bob, sitting there and telling stories.)
